24: A Eulogy for a Friend Not Yet Gone

I thought that this would be a good idea for a Facebook photo. Needless to say, I was wrong.

Well, the news broke yesterday that "24," the show that has been such a big part of my life for eight seasons, will be ending soon. It's a bittersweet ending, seeing as true fans of the show that have stuck with it for its entire run know that it should have ended a while ago, but have been enjoying its death rattles for a couple season's now.

"24" debuted in 2001, extremely post-9/11. This was an edgy choice on many levels, not least of which was that it dealt with counter-terrorism on an extremely binary level (at least at the beginning). Jack Bauer, played to perfection by Kiefer Sutherland, was the epitome of the "good guy." He was a badass, plain and simple. He represented all that was right with government and the idea that defeating the bad guy was the highest good, something that should be pursued at all costs. He worked for CTU, which is the latest in the long line of government organizations that seem to have all of the best technology at their disposal to kick terrorist ass.

The first season of "24" was produced before 9/11, so it took it a full season to tap into the Islamic/Muslim confusion and fears that we were all feeling at the time. However, the parallels were uncanny. While this might have driven some people away, fans of the show, I believe, were enticed by the show's suspense and belief that, at the end of the day, the good guys would win and everything would be OK.

"24" was a gamechanger for me in many ways. I had fallen in love with the medium of TV a few years prior with "The West Wing." But, "24" was the first time that I was surprised by TV. As in shocked. As in, when Nina Meyers was revealed to be the mole in the second to last episode of the first season, I ran around the house screaming, flabbergasted at what had just occurred. I swore it couldn't be Nina! We had grown to trust Nina over the last 20 or so hours. How could she do this to me? To us? To America?!

Then, Teri Bauer died. And I realized that storytelling could do some damn cruel things to the characters that we love. We had watched Teri go through the wringer with her daughter, Kim, and while she may have done some stupid things, it was all in the name of love and country.

After the death of Teri had settled, I was still obsessed with "24." And, the obsession never waned, even when the show's quality might have. The memories I have of watching "24" with my friends and family will never be replaced. They include...

  • Chloe going out into the field with her M4 and killing some bad guys.
  • Edgar Stiles shutting down all but one of the nuclear reactors, saving millions and giving himself some self-confidence in the process.
  • Tony Almeida saving Jack when he cornered in a warehouse.
  • Kim Bauer getting chased by a cougar and shacking up with a survivalist nutball.
  • Kim Bauer coming back to CTU inexplicably as a computer genius.
  • Numerous Chloe scowls and moments of being right, even when everyone (except Jack) doubted her.
  • President David Palmer dying.
  • Michelle Desler dying.
  • Edgar Stiles dying in the most excruciating death scene EVER PUT TO FILM!
  • Jack killing a guy and beheading him, all in the name of freedom.
  • Jack biting a guy in the jugular vein, all in the name of freedom.
  • Audrey Rains taking a phone call, and never being the same again.
  • The bombing of CTU.
  • Jack being declared legally dead.
  • Jack actually dying then being brought back to life.
  • Michelle Dessler wearing the loudest high heels while trying to be covert.
  • Jack having to kill Curtis, all in the name of freedom.
  • George Mason crashing a plane in the desert to die nobly and save thousands.
  • Jack becoming some guy named Mike, who worked on an oil rig in Texas.
  • Jack's man purse and aviator sunglasses.
  • President David Palmer leaving Sherry Palmer.
The list could keep going. Hell, it probably went too long to begin with. But it just goes to show how powerful the show was and how my memories of it will never go away. And, while some have jumped off the bandwagon and will never return, I feel that the show is going out on top, the way it should. How it ends, however, has yet to be seen.

Morning Read for Tuesday, March 23, 2010

TV

Here is the A.V. Club's review of 24 from last night, which I disagree with. Here's the TV Squad's review, which is much more reasonable.

IFC will be making a TV show with The Onion. (Mashable!)

That reality show that Sarah Palin's been shopping around? Apparently, she wants to be a travel expert.

Music

I need this album. I've already heard the cover of "Private Eyes" and it's fantastic. Aside from that, the A.V. Club also has a pretty awesome review of She + Him's new album.

Movies

Emma Stone might star in a movie about 1960's Southern nannies who pull a "9 to 5" and rise up against the rules governing them. I'll see Emma Stone in pretty much anything. (/Film)

Wes Craven will direct Scream 4, which will come out next year. /Film has a great roundup of everything we know about it so far.

Sony wants to give Popeye the big screen, 3D treatment. How does that NOT sound like a horrible idea? (/Film)

Tom Hanks wants to turn Green Day's American Idiot into a film. I just wonder if it would work in a post-Bush era.

Have fake breasts? Then don't bother applying for Pirates of the Carribean 4. (WWTDD)

Politics

Apparently, Canada isn't the biggest fan of Ann Coulter. (Mediaite)

Other

Here, thanks to Geekologie, is the cutest photobomb you'll ever see. Ever. EVER!

Gawker is reporting that health care bill will force fast-food restaurants to report nutritional facts on all their food. I can't say that's a bad thing, really.

The man who has dedicated his life to this banana museum in California is being forced to close it down and make way for a new exhibit. I would have to file this under the complete bullshit category.

Here's an awesome list of the 13 Most Annoying Ad Characters, from Guyism.

There's an important update to Firefox, for those who are into that sort of thing. (Lifehacker)

People of Wal-Mart is an amazing site. How does one pull this off?

Morning Read for Monday, March 22, 2010

So, I'm trying new things here on the blog to keep it regular (like Metamucil) so, every morning, I'm going to sum up all of the links I read as soon as I wake up and down some coffee. Here we go!

BOOKS

Here's a NYT Book Review piece on two books about Paul Newman and Martha Stewart. One sounds like a loving tribute to a friend and business partner while the other sounds like a salacious tell-all. I doubt I'll read either.

TV

Here's a TV pilot roundup from The Hollywood Reporter. This show "No Ordinary Family" sounds really interesting, so I hope it gets picked up. I think networks know that there's an audience for good superhero-themed shows, but Heroes sure isn't it.

SOCIAL MEDIA

From Mashable comes a Twitter version of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books from when I was a kid. I plan on doing this at some point.

Here's a great NYT piece about Geo-Location services like FourSquare and Gowalla and how they work in a normal, everyday setting.

Rosie O'Donnell is going to return to TV again. We'll see how that works out. (NYT)

MOVIES

Rebecca Hall from Frost/Nixon will be co-starring with Will Ferrell in an interesting sound movie called Everything Must Go, according to JoBlo.

JoBlo also has a review of How to Train Your Dragon. The full trailer, as opposed to the less-than-stellar Olympics commercials from last month, plus this review make this a must-see for me.

Here's some casting news on Salvation, a very interesting sounding legal thriller with Ed Harris.

I love the A.V. Club's lists. Here are 14 movie ripoffs.

JoBlo has an awesome new poster for The Losers. This looks like it should be a fun movie, even though it coincides with both The A-Team and The Expendables which sound pretty similar.

GAMING

Here's the AV Club's review of Metro 2033. This is the first less-than-stellar review I've read of Metro.

OTHER

Kim Kardashian looking good
, from TMZ.

Apparently, Octomom can keep her house from being foreclosed...for a price. (TMZ)

Tila Tequila's having a garage sale. How far would you be willing to travel to buy a piece of memorabilia from Tila Tequila? (TMZ again.)

This week, I think I'm going to try to make my own Goldfish-like crackers. Thanks, Mashable!

Darth Vader vs. Batman. What else can I say? (Geekologie)

Maybe Catman could defeat Lord Vader? (Geekologie)

Workout Awesome Adventure Saga: Day 1

Is anyone not a fan of that title? I wanted it to sound like poorly translated Japanese. Did I succeed?

Today I started working out on a regular basis. I planned on starting Monday, but a snag in travel led to me starting today. I went out to the local high school track and did intervals for about 10 laps, which is either 1 or 2 miles. Does anyone know this?

Let me tell you, it was a bitch! As I said in a previous post, I'm using the Podrunner: Intervals podcast to keep me focused and everytime I had to start running, I was cursing the DJ for making me do this. I can assure you that my knees and legs will kill me tomorrow.

I meant to weigh myself before I left home but forgot. I'm trying to find a cheap scale so I can track my weight, which is crucial.

A Horrifying Event and My New Project

From my last post, you might remember that I am currently looking for a job. Now that I'm unemployed, my days consist of a lot of wandering around my apartment and time online. There are many projects I have going at the same time. These include...

  • Watching "Mad Men"
  • Watching "Firefly"
  • Watching the UK version of "Life on Mars"
  • Job hunting
  • Watching all of the Oscar 2010 films, plus several others
Did you see a trend there? I'm taking this opportunity to watch some things I've always wanted to and haven't. But, one thing has been left off of that list.

I kept telling myself that, when it got warmer or when the time was right, I would start working out again. A couple of summers ago, I worked out and went on a diet and lost 25 pounds. It felt fantastic. I was fully ensconced in Celebrity Fit Club-ness with The Fat Smash Diet and the Celebrity Fit Club Boot Camp Workout DVD. But, once I got back to school, that went away (even though I walked everywhere). Now, I don't do either.

My procrastination ended today when, while reaching for a cup of coffee, my gut opened up my media player on my MacBook Pro. That's right...my tum-tum hit the trackpad and opened up VLC player. It was a stunning moment that lead me to plan out a workout plan.

So, my new project is training for a 5K. Who knows whether I'll actually ever run a 5K, but I'm setting my goals high, OK? To help me out, I'm using the Podrunner: Intervals podcast, which changes music to help you time out intervals at which you should walk/run. I need something like this to help me because, otherwise, I would just get bored by it and never workout again. I'll do that three days a week and maybe cardio indoors one day with the The Biggest Loser Workout I have on iTunes. I used it on conjunction with CFC when I lost all that weight and it's fun, short and easy to do in the apartment.

As always, I'm going to make an extreme effort to keep this blog updated with my progress, as well as all of my other projects. The 5K training starts Monday.
